Dianna has been an award-winning author of many internationally acclaimed books for young readers for all of the 21st century. “An Egg is Quiet” was named a Best Book of the Century by The Wall Street Journal. “A Shell is Cozy” received the same designation from Kirkus Reviews. Librarians have called her 7-book science books ‘lyrical science.’ Dianna says she didn’t realize she was writing science books until “An Egg is Quiet” received an award for best science picture book by the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru. A highlight of her career as an author was when President Barack Obama and Mrs. Obama read “The Moon Over Star” to second graders to celebrate Black History Month, just two weeks after he first took office! She is a first-generation Texan (and proud of it!), but she has also lived a storybook life in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Marceline, Missouri (Walt Disney’s childhood home), Ohio, Michigan, and Oklahoma. Once she even lived in the loft of an airplane hangar! Her home for now is on Corpus Christi Bay. She is equally at home at the Texas State Aquarium as an exhibit, host interacting with sharks, dolphins, rescued sea turtles, flamingos, alligators, sting rays, jellyfish and hermit crabs. And people.

During the seven years she lived in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, she helped build houses in rural villages and volunteered on a lavender farm, AZUL LAVANDA. and
The Lavendar Project. After meeting the farmer-entrepreneur, Aucencio Domenzain Martinez and his daughter, Diana, she was inspired to begin writing a “based on a true story” manuscript about the feelings a child has when her father crosses the border to find work in Texas.
From her village high in the Mexican desert, she worries about the danger he faces as an undocumented worker and finds comfort in the wise whisperings of her late grandmother, who visits her in her dreams. [The middle of a story is always the greatest challenge, and that’s where I am.] Ultimately, growing lavender turns the village into a sustainable one that even includes a library. Best of all, the men have plenty of work on the lavender farm that provides enough for them to stay home with their families in the village of La Colorado.
